What are meta tags and why do they matter for SEO?

Meta tags are HTML elements in your page's <head> section that tell search engines and social media platforms what your page is about. The two most important for SEO are the title tag (controls what appears as the blue link in Google results) and the meta description (the gray text below it).

Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) control how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, and iMessage. Missing OG tags mean these platforms auto-generate a preview that's usually ugly and unhelpful.

Title tag best practices

  • 50-60 characters — Google truncates titles longer than ~60 characters
  • Put keywords first — "Best Running Shoes 2026 | BrandName" beats "BrandName | Best Running Shoes 2026"
  • Unique per page — every page on your site needs its own title

Meta description best practices

  • 120-160 characters — Google truncates descriptions longer than ~160 characters
  • Include a call to action — "Shop now," "Learn more," "Free shipping"
  • Summarize the page value — what will the searcher get by clicking?
